Fresh twist in Beckham tug-of-war
AC Milan have refused to be put off signing David Beckham, despite LA Galaxy's insistence the midfielder will return when his loan ends on 8 March.
Galaxy are unhappy Milan failed to meet a Major League Soccer deadline to close the deal by Friday for the 33-year-old.
Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani dismissed Galaxy's stance as a "tactic" and the Serie A club's coach Carlo Ancelotti thinks a move is possible.
"Galaxy has forced the situation, but there's time before 9 March," he said.
"We've still got 20 days to close the deal," added Ancelotti ahead of Sunday's Milan derby. "My wish is that he can play in other derbies."
With Galaxy and Milan at odds, Beckham and his advisors say they will consider their position next week after Sunday's meeting with league-leaders Inter Milan.
"David is focused on the Milan derby this Sunday. We will be addressing this early next week," said Beckham's spokesman Simon Oliveira.
BBC Sport understands that Beckham's advisors remain confident that a deal can be brokered next week despite the passing of Galaxy's arbitrary deadline.
Beckham has the option of buying out his contract and has a clause which means he can leave Galaxy for nothing in November, though returning to America for the remainder of the current season could put his place in England's squad in jeopardy.
Beckham had moved to Milan on loan in an attempt to revive his international career after England head coach Fabio Capello said he needed to be playing more competitive football.
The England international, who equalled Bobby Moore's England record of 108 caps for an outfield player in Wednesday's 2-0 defeat by Spain in Seville, has become a regular for Milan since his arrival in January.
However, with England set for nine internationals from the end of March until October, including six qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup, a return to the MLS could see Beckham left out of the national squad.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star has settled in quickly at the San Siro, impressing both Ancelotti, his team-mates and rival managers with his professionalism and work ethic.
Speaking ahead of the Milan derby, outspoken Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho said: "Beckham is a great champion and he is trying to remain with Milan.
"For the good of the league, for Italian football, I hope he stays - he has improved Milan as I knew he would when he arrived in Italy.
"The fears people had over his signing were not fair on the player. He is a top professional, has ambition, is in great condition and is always motivated to play well.
"You cannot always control how a player adapts to his new surroundings, but Beckham has clearly adapted to his club and the Italian league.
"He gives his team different qualities and that is a good thing."
Beckham has made a big impact on the pitch, scoring on his third appearance and netting with a trademark free-kick in the recent win over Genoa, a game watched by Capello.
But the chief executive of Galaxy owners AEG, Tim Leiweke, insisted Beckham would have to return to the MLS.
Asked what would happen should the Italian return with an improved offer, Leiweke said the club "owe it to our fans" not to consider it.
Leiweke insists the Rossoneri have never come close to meeting AEG's and the league's asking price.
However, US football expert Sean Wheelock told BBC Radio 5 Live that he thought Beckham could still end up at Milan.
"Until I actually see a definite statement coming out of the New York offices of MLS soccer and quotes of the league commissioner, Don Garber, I don't believe that this matter is resolved," said Wheelock.
"I still think that there is a chance - albeit a slim one - that David Beckham could stay permanently at AC Milan and may not return to LA Galaxy. I just don't think this is a resolved matter."

Man City move for Kaka collapses

AC Milan playmaker Kaka has turned down a lucrative move to Manchester City.
The Premier League club had reportedly bid in excess of £100m for the 26-year-old Brazilian and offered him weekly wages of £500,000.
Kaka told AC Milan's television channel: "At the moment I don't want to change anything.
"All the messages that I received said to choose with the heart and I think in the end that has been the decision. It is absolutely not about money."
AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi told Italian television on Monday evening that Kaka had opted to stay at Milan.
And City issued a statement saying they had ended talks, believing it was unlikely a deal could be struck with the Italian side.
Executive chairman Garry Cook said: "The discussions reached only a preliminary stage and the player was not involved at any time."
City's bid for Kaka was worth £50m more than the current world transfer fee record Real Madrid paid to Juventus to sign Zinedine Zidane in 2001.
"That's the end of the story," Berlusconi said. "I'm truly delighted to have kept Kaka at Milan.
"Kaka is a great champion and a great man. He has refused the offer from Manchester City, giving privilege to Milan, his companions and his fans.
"He said it's because money isn't everything in life. Kaka is staying with us and we're delighted. Money is important, but there are also other things that are important.
"The fans are delighted too. Turning down so much money is something to admire."
Cook, who spent Monday in meetings with Milan officials and Kaka's father and advisor Bosco Leite, added: "A transfer must work commercially, financially, results on the field and within City's broader community. No commercial terms were framed."
Earlier, a group of Milan fans had protested outside the club's headquarters over the possible sale of the Brazilian.

Supporters had also gathered outside Kaka's house and he responded by beating his hand on his heart while holding a Milan shirt.
On Saturday Kaka had played in Milan's 1-0 win over Fiorentina at the San Siro, with the home fans displaying banners such as "Kaka is Priceless" and "Hands Off Kaka".
After the game England international David Beckham, who is currently on loan at Milan from United States club LA Galaxy, had predicted the Brazilian would opt to stay at the San Siro.
"I don't think anybody in the dressing room is thinking about how much money they can earn," Beckham said.
"It's about playing with the best team, with the best players in the world and winning trophies, and it's not always about money.
"Ricardo doesn't need my advice. He will decide what he wants to do, but he loves Milan. I don't think he will leave."

Kaka joined Serie A giants Milan from Sao Paulo in 2003 and has since won the Italian league title, Champions League and Club World Cup.
The attacking midfielder has scored 86 goals in 244 appearances for Milan. He has also picked up 62 caps for Brazil and scored 23 goals.
Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, estimated to be worth £15bn, took over as City owner in September 2008 and extensive funds have been made available to City manager Mark Hughes.
So far he has secured the services of Wayne Bridge and Craig Bellamy during the January transfer window.

"But was Kaka ever going to come to City for football reasons?"
Kaka is under contract at the San Siro until 2013, and although he stated last February that he wanted to remain at Milan for the rest of his career, he had hinted at a desire to play in the Premier League - which he has described as the "best championship in the world".

Vietnam Food
The cuisine of Vietnam comes as a pleasant surprise to many visitors and is definitely a part of the Vietnam experience not to be missed. One of the characteristics of Vietnamese food is that it is always fresh being bought the same morning straight from the market. Food is usually prepared with a minimal amount of oil and served with the ubiquitous fish sauce called nuoc mam.
Typical Vietnamese dishes you can expect to try include pho, a type of rice noodle soup eaten for breakfast; cha gio, deep-fried spring rolls; and goi ngo sen, a delicious salad made with lotus stems, shrimp and peanuts. Due to the strong Buddhist influence in Vietnam, vegetarian food is widely available.
